How Do You Know If You Have Knob and Tube Wiring in Your Fircrest Home?

knob and tube wiring fircrestIn many cases, a professional electrician will recommend that your knob and tube wiring be replaced, or at least evaluated to ensure it’s still safe. This older type of wiring isn’t designed to handle the typically higher electrical needs of today’s homes and businesses. Not sure if you have this kind of electrical service in your home? Here are a few clues.

Your Home Was Built Before 1950

Residential electrical service that’s at least 70-75 years old is more likely to include knobs and wires or K&T wiring. This was once the accepted standard for household lighting, appliances and electrical outlets, reaching its peak from roughly the 1920s through the 1940s, although it was commonly used up through the 1950s.

Porcelain Tubes in Your Basement or Attic

If you can see much of your home’s electrical service wires in your basement or attic, you may have K&T wiring. Look for small white tubes made of porcelain or similar ceramic with wires running through them.

There is No Third Prong For Your Outlets

K&T wiring doesn’t include a grounding wire. In 3-prong outlets, the third prong is for the grounding wire. So if you have only 2-prong outlets, it’s a sign that your electrical wiring may be older than what your household electricity demands can safely handle.
